Motion Graphics Exercises

kaleidomeow

i imported MotionGraphicsCat.jpg (a picture of a cat on a white background) into a new composition. i applied the color range effect to key out the white matte. i named this composition MotionGraphicsCat.

i placed MotionGraphicsCat into a new composition. it was made a 3D layer, and keyframed to move from Z position 2000 to Z position -3000, rotate 420 degrees on the X axis, rotate 3600 degrees on the Y axis, and rotate 1800 degrees on the Z axis. i created a camera and left its settings on default. i named this composition welp.

i placed MotionGraphicsCat into a new composition. its position was keyframed to move from 960, -300 to 960, 1500. this composition was named vertical_move.

i placed MotionGraphicsCat into a new composition. its position was keyframed to move from -500, 540 to 2500, 540.  this composition was named horizontal_move.

i placed MotionGraphicsCat into a new composition. it was keyframed to rotate from 0 degrees to 1800 degrees. the anchor point was keyframed to move from the center of MotionGraphicsCat to the corner and back. this composition was named ROTATE.

i placed welp, vertical_move, horizontal_move, and ROTATE into a new composition. this composition was named catcat.

i placed three catcat layers into a new composition. the middle layer was rotated 60 degrees, the bottom layer was rotated -60 degrees. this composition was named catcatcat.

i placed two catcatcat layers into a new composition. the bottom layer was rotated 180 degrees. this composition was named cat4.

i placed three cat4 layers into a new composition. the top two cat4 layers were made a 3D layers and rotated on the Y axis, one 30 degrees and the other -30 degrees. the bottom cat4 layer was renamed bg. this composition was named 3dcats.

i placed two 3dcats into a new composition, with the one on top using the difference blending mode to create more interesting colors.

finally, i placed two more cat4 layers on top of the 3dcats layers. the top cat4 layer was keyframed to fade from 100% opacity to 0% approximately halfway through. the bottom cat4 layer was set to blending mode overlay. both were time-reversed.

this composition was exported.

 

flying through space

i placed space.jpg (a photo of space, tinted purple) into a new composition. i scaled it by about 250% and keyframed it to scroll from right to left across the screen. this composition was named space_scroll.

i placed ship.ai (a transparent spaceship graphic) into a new composition. i created a new solid and applied the effect particular to it. using particular, i built an exhaust for the ship. i applied the color range effect to the solid and keyed out the black so the effect would be transparent. this composition was named ship w/fire.

i placed ship w/fire into a new composition. it was keyframed to fly horizontally for a bit, then smoothly rotate -37 degrees and fly up into the corner of the frame. this composition was named move_rotate.

i placed move_rotate and space_scroll into a new composition.

this composition was exported.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

moon orbiting earth orbiting sun

i placed sun.jpg, earth.jpg, and moon.jpg (photos of each celestial body on black mattes) into their own compositions. i keyframed each to rotate 360 degrees. these compositions were named sun_rotate, earth_rotate, and moon_rotate.

i placed earth_rotate and moon_rotate into a new composition. i moved moon_rotate’s anchor point so it was distanced from the earth, then keyframed it to orbit the earth once. this composition was named moon_orbit.

i placed moon_orbit and sun_rotate, and a black solid into a new composition. i moved moon_orbit’s anchor point so it was distanced from the sun, then keyframed it to orbit the sun once.

this composition was looped 5 times, and exported.

 

 

 

ship explode

i placed ship.ai (a transparent spaceship graphic) and a black solid into a new composition. i added expressions to position, scale, and rotation. position was told “wiggle(20, 50*time)”, while scale and rotation were told “wiggle(10, 30*time)”, which would make the graphic move back and forth, expand and contract, and rotate back and forth with increasing frequency. i then added a new solid 2 seconds in and added the effect particular to it. using particular, i created a basic explosion effect.

this composition was exported.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

gross water

i placed static_water.jpg (a basic water graphic) into a new composition. i applied the wave warp effect to it. this composition was named wave_warping.

i created a new composition and made an oval shape. i keyframed its anchor points to create a water splashing animation. this composition was named water_drop.

i placed water_drop and wave_warping into a new composition. i track matted wave_warping onto water_drop, which gave the water texture the shape of the animation.

this composition was exported.

 

 

 

 

 

octo

i brought Octopus.jpg (a photo of an octopus and a fish underwater) into photoshop and separated the octopus, fish, and background into layers bg, octo_boi, and fish_boi, which were imported into after effects.

i placed fish_boi, octo_boi, and bg into a composition. fish_boi was keyframed to swim in an upward arc over the octopus using position and rotation. octo_boi was pinned 23 times with the puppet pin tool and each pin was keyframed.

this composition was exported.

 

 

greg tower

i placed MVI_9776.MP4 (a video of a classmate, greg, jogging in place on a green screen) into a new composition. i keyed out the green screen using keylight and removed what couldn’t be keyed with a garbage matte. this composition was named greg_keying.

i placed greg_keying into a new composition, then cropped the composition to remove excess space. this composition was named greg_crop.

i placed greg_crop and carpet.jpg (a photo of bowling alley carpet) into a composition with a light. greg_crop was made into a 3D layer and moved diagonally towards the camera while rotating 1080 degrees along the Z axis. carpet.jpg was track matted onto greg_crop. this composition was named greg_spin.

in a new composition, i staggered 40 greg_spins by about 5 frames each to create a trail of them. this composition was named greg_layer.

i placed two greg_layers into a new composition. the top layer was given the black & white effect and tinted tan, then the opacity was brought down to 35%.

this composition was exported.

 

 

 

 

 

 

lemonade

i placed lemonade.mp3 (a 25-excerpt of “lemonade”, a song by mili) into a new composition and created black solid 1 and white solid 1.

i used the keyframe assistant to convert lemonade.mp3‘s waveform to keyframes, which created audio amplitude. i deleted the right and left sides, as all i needed was the “both channels” section.

i applied the particular effect to white solid 1. using paticular, i built a simple generator that spewed circles of slightly varying shades of yellow. i pick-whipped the particle size and velocity to audio amplitude, and wrote some additional code to adjust the math outputs to my preference. by doing this, the particles would be larger and faster when the music was louder.

i placed lemonade.png (a simple drawing of a lemon slice) into the composition. i applied the bulge effect to it, and pick-whipped it to audio amplitude. i divided the value by 20 to prevent the image from getting stuck at maximum bulge. this made the lemon act a bit like a speaker.

this singular composition was exported.

clipping flower

i created black solid 1, black solid 2, and black solid 3 in a new composition.

i applied the checkerboard effect to black solid 1 and black solid 2. both were white, and 2 had squares three times the size of 1‘s. i keyframed them to rotate 180 degrees in opposite directions, and set 2‘s blending mode to difference.

i applied the cell pattern effect to black solid 3. i set the cell pattern to plates, and keyframed the evolution so the cells would move. i then applied the tint effect, and set black to cyan and white to purple. black solid 3‘s blending mode was set to exclusion, which altered the composition’s colors dramatically. this composition was named overlay.

i placed overlay into a new composition and created black solid 4 and black solid 5. black solid 5 was set as the background.

i applied the radio wave effect to black solid 4 and, after setting the waves to be polygons instead of circles, keyframed the frequency, spin, and number of sides to increase over time, which created a spinning flower sort of appearance. i also increased the stroke width so that the pattern would be visible when i placed it on top.

overlay was set to track matte black solid 4, which projected the pattern onto the radio waves.

the composition was then exported.

heart tubes

i created a new composition and created black solid 1. this was the background.

i created a new black solid, large, and drew a heart-shaped path using the pen tool. i then applied the trapcode tao effect to it. the path and taper ends were keyframed so the tube shape drew across the screen.

large was duplicated and the tao segments were shrunk so the tube was thinner. this layer was named small.

approximately 2 seconds in, a number of duplicated larges and smalls turn on and the originals turn off. one duplicate of small has the starglow effect applied, and the entire layer is set to the blending layer add. several others have varying strengths of gaussian blur attached. most of the layers are keyframed to drop in opacity to mimic the dimming effect a light has when it turns on.

this composition was exported.
